Fun Things to do during the Winter in Pittsburgh

There are many fun things to do during the winter in Pittsburgh, whether it’s indoor or outdoor.  Some outdoor activities include sledding, going downtown to Market Square, ice skating near the tree down downtown, and skiing.

There are a lot of hills to sled on in Pittsburgh and in outside townships, my favorites being Fox Chapel and Oakmont. Since Pittsburgh is a mountainous area you have to look for a clear, safe hill that other people are sledding on.

You can always go downtown to Market Square and walk through the different types of shops that are there. Usually, Santa is there for kids to visit. A lot of excellent restaurants are near Market Square, such as Primanti Bros. and Las Velas.

Before or after going to Market Square you can go ice skating around the giant Christmas tree downtown. You can either rent or bring your own skates.

Another activity that many people in Pittsburgh do is skiing.  There are a couple of places to ski not far from Pittsburgh such as Seven Springs, Nemacolin, and Boyce Park.

Sevens Springs is a popular ski area and has many different slopes for more advanced skiers. It also has slopes for beginners.

Boyce Park is a nice place to go when you do not want to ski all day because it does not have a lot of slopes. However, each slope is fun and it does not take that long to get back up to the top of the hill on the ski lifts.

There are many indoor fun attractions in the winter that you can do in Pittsburgh. A popular attraction is going to the Phipps Observatory and seeing the beautiful lights that they decorate plants with.

Phipps Conservatory is famous for its lights and plants that they put the lights on. When you go to Phipps you walk around the different exhibits until you get to the end.

There is an outside part to it but you are not required to go through it.  I think it is intriguing because of the different decorations that they put up around the vegetation.

They also have a mini-train exhibit there that attracts a lot of kids.

Another inside activity is going to see drive-thru lights.

The more popular one is the Butler lights and usually has a long line to get into. This light show is fun because it is not short but not too long and some of the lights there go along with the beat of the music they play.

Another less popular drive-thru light show is in the Pittsburgh Mills. I am pretty sure it is new this year and is not as big as the Butler one.

I have not been through this one but from the looks of it from driving past it, it looks like a coordinated and entertaining light show.

These activities are some of my favorite and I would definitely recommend them to anyone looking for something to do in the winter.
