The 22-23 Central Catholic football season is in full swing, and the long-awaited return to the gridiron has Viking supporters excited for their team’s return and a possible WPIAL or PIAA championship title.

I interviewed Offensive Coordinator Coach Steven Bezila about the start of the season, his thoughts on the future of the season, and long-term improvements f0r the team.

When asked about the difficulties and struggles of being an offensive coordinator, Coach Bezila said, “To get everyone on the offense balanced, everyone needs to be equal on attack.”

Coach Bezila has a new mindset coming into this season, as he explains, “Fresh start and fresh approach.” This includes keeping his offense motivated after a loss or a low-scoring game.

“They watch film on their missed opportunities in the game, focusing on details and missed assignments.”

Coach Bezila feels that halftime adjustments are important, saying, “They are very important now with video replay, so we can look at the other team’s defense more.”

When asked about his opinion on Central’s chances at the WPIAL title again this year, he said “We are taking it one week at a time. For us, it’s win or nothing each and every game.”

As of October 5, Central Catholic’s record is 3-3 ( 1-2), and the team is currently ranked 12th in Pennsylvania high school football.

Last season Central Catholic took a crushing loss to Mt. Lebanon 42-7 in the WPIAL championship. Central Catholic has 8 WPIAL titles and 4 PIAA state championships. They also have a number of players with multiple D1 offers and scholarships including Anthony Speca ’24, Peter Gonzalez ’24, Vernon Settles ’24, Ty Yuhas ’24, and Cole Sullivan ’24. Many other players hold offers from multiple schools, too.
