Student Council Candidates Announce Their Platforms, Declare “Student Involvement” a Top Priority

Last Thursday, Dylan Deasy, Bobby Elder, and Connor Ludwig took to the stage and addressed their classmates, each declaring their candidacy for Student Council President.

Each speech was met with varying degrees of enthusiasm as the students expressed support for their candidate of choice. As the candidates delivered their speeches, the auditorium was silent and loud in turns, the noise rising as speeches hit on key points such as increasing school spirit.

Of the three candidates, Dylan Deasy seemed to generate the most support from the crowd, with his promises of pep rallies at the beginning of sports seasons, increased recognition of lesser-known sports, and higher turnout at Central football games.

Bobby Elder also focused on the potential of Central sports, confidently stating that Central football will take the WPIAL championship this year, and, perhaps looking to extend his audience, mentioned the basketball team’s success.

He also promised that certain student council traditions during Spirit Week, such as the Mineo’s vs. Aiello’s day, would continue under his tenure.

Connor Ludwig spoke about his hopes for making school activities more enjoyable for students. He, along with Elder, made a point to exclude “empty promises” from their campaigns, emphasizing honesty and realistic goal setting. Ludwig provided a personal statement later to clarify his plans for office, saying “We are for honesty and the overall improvement of the student body experience.”

When the campaign speeches concluded, Mr. Donahue opened the floor for questions. One student was curious about how each candidate would respond to “the tyranny of the Central Catholic administration.” Every candidate indicated that they were hoping to work with Central’s administration instead of against them, with Elder saying, “We’re a unit.”

Among the students, Dylan Deasy is the heavy favorite to win the election. Some have even taken up the task of campaigning for his ticket throughout the school. Says one such volunteer, “Deasy actually wants to do something for the students.” Even then, based on audience approval, Deasy may be the most likely Student Council president for next year.

Dylan Deasy’s running mate is Anthony Shovlin. Bobby Elder’s running mate is Josh Moline, and Connor Ludwig’s is John Beeson.

Edit: May 26 – Congratulations to Dylan Deasy and Anthony Shovlin!
