Central Catholic’s Tennis Team Takes Center Court in Impressive Season

This year, Central Catholic’s tennis team took center court, facing a difficult schedule against powerhouse opponents like Shady Side, North Allegheny, and Upper St. Clair. Despite the slate of strong teams in the WPIAL, the Vikes certaintly did not disappoint.

Led by first-singles player Anthony Arshoun ’23, the team was able to rally in close matches thanks to their impressive skill depth at all levels.

While small – just 9 members – the tennis team benefited from the veteran leadership of seniors Will Kane, ’23, Jack Sabo, ’23, Jake Pistolesi, ’23, Baden O’Toole, ’23, and Yosei Fukasaku, ’23.

Undoubtedly, these seniors were instrumental to the team’s success this year, as each won critical matches at various times throughout the season to cement the Vikes as a dominant force on the high school tennis circuit in Western Pennsylvania.

Just as the team marked the halfway point of the long, grueling season, second-singles star player Ryan Broadhurst, ’23 suffered a season-ending lower-body injury.

While this was a devastating blow to the Vikes’ roster, the team came together to compensate for Ryan’s absence on the court.

As the tennis team closes the book on yet another successful year, Head Coach Zach Johnson reflects on the 2023 season, saying, “I’m really proud of these boys and all of the adversity that they have had to overcome this year. Roll Vikes!”

Next year, the tennis team only has two returning players, which means that they desperately need to recruit up-and-coming Vikings if they want to continue to remain a competitive team.
