How Viking Venture Builds Young Men into Leaders

Have you ever asked yourself, “ Do I have what it takes to become a leader?” Do you have what it takes to be a leader in the classroom, on the field, and in the community?

Regardless of your answer to the previous question, you should attend Central’s Viking Venture Leadership Week at the Outdoor Odyssey Leadership Program.

It is here where leadership skills are built and real leaders of the school community are formed.

Viking Venture provides a space for rising juniors to discover themselves and form leadership skills they need for school, sports, and extracurriculars.

Mr. Ferguson is one of the faculty members responsible for getting students involved with Viking Venture.

When Mr. Ferguson was asked what Viking Venture means to him, he said, “Viking Venture is a great experience for young men to learn about themselves and transform into better leaders. Viking Venture benefits the Central community because all members who graduate from the program share similar experiences that they went through in Viking Venture and bring their servant leadership back to school.”

What Mr. Ferguson notes that Viking Venture is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to transform yourself into an effective leader, while bonding with different students from school whom they may not traditionally associate.

Mr. Ferguson also talked about how Viking Venture helps prepares leaders for the future and gives them a chance to practice leadership.

We also interviewed Mr. Sheridan, another faculty member who supervises the Viking Venture Program. When Mr. Sheridan was asked why should students attend Viking Venture, he responded, “Viking Venture is a premier leadership program that strengthens students’ skills and experience of leadership.”

Mr. Sheridan also added that he is proud of all the 85 students at Central Catholic that have graduated from the program and how they use what they learned about leadership in each of their local communities.

Mr. Sheridan further notes, “The goal is to build the program so we are able to bring a select number of students from Central to Outdoor Odyssey each year, and where the students can learn that leadership is about humility and genuine concern for others.  Students bring these ideas to Central with the idea to help serve others.”

Mr. Sheridan emphasizes that true leadership is not about making rules or corporate decisions, but rather about how you treat others and how you connect with your community on a deeper level as a faith-filled leader.

Mr. Sheridan added that if you are a student who decides to attend Viking Venture, you will be challenged to go outside your comfort zone to achieve growth.

We also interviewed Junior Andrew Price who attended Viking Venture this past summer. Price was asked why he attended Viking Venture, and how it changed his view about leadership. He said, “Leadership is about truly staying calm and leading your club or team to the promised land. Viking Venture taught me to be a leader who helps others and my community.”
