TV Review: The Owl House

The introduction I had to The Owl House was a clip of one of the characters on TikTok.

While you would not usually expect to find a TV show that you think is amazing on TikTok, you can find the most exciting things from the most unexpected places.

Although one clip on TikTok can’t make people invested in a show, I hope this review can.

The Owl House follows a girl named Luz Noceda who finds herself in a magical realm called The Boiling Isles. It turns out to be the most dangerous place a human can go since it’s surrounded by witches and demons.

In The Boiling Isles, Luz finds Eda Clawthrone, the most powerful witch in all the Isles. Due to her power, Eda is being hunted by her own sister, Lilith. Now, Luz is trapped in this crazy world and is caught squarely in the crosshairs of a major battle between magical powers.

While it would make sense for Luz to go back to the human world, she chooses to stay. But why would any sane person want to stay in this crazy world? I don’t know, but it somehow fits Luz.

In order to understand the complex characterization of Luz, you first have to understand how she got entrapped in this magical world. Luz was sent to a summer camp in an attempt to “normalize” her so that she would fit into society’s mold.

Luz isn’t a troublemaker but is instead an extremely creative person who isn’t great when it comes to social cues. She was different compared to everyone else.

When Luz met Eda, she immediately recognized someone she could relate to and understand – something that she didn’t have in the real world. For this reason, she wanted to stick with Eda, and that’s how The Owl House was born.

Of course, there are so many different characters, storylines, plot twists, and adventures that I can go on and on about. But this first episode sets the scene for why Luz, Eda, and King choose to journey through The Boiling Isles together.

They’re misfits, so why not be misfits together? This idea is why it’s one of my favorite cartoons to ever release on television.

It’s heartbreaking that a human decided to stay in a crazy world because it was the first place she truly ever felt understood, but it’s something most people can relate to in their own lives.

In The Owl House, characters find true friends and decide to go to war with them due to the impact that they make on their lives.

This cartoon shows us that genuinely fitting in and finding your group of people is one of the best feelings in the world, and it is this complexity that warrants watching The Owl House.
