On Friday, President Donald Trump met with the new mayor elect of New York, Zohran Mamdani, at the White House. It was a meeting that had surprised many. The two men have long fought, but during this visit, both tried being open minded and focused on solving problems together.
Trump opened the meeting by saying positive things about Mamdani. Fox News reported that Trump referred to Mamdani as “a very rational person” and that “we actually have something big in common.” He said, “We want this city of ours that we love to do very well.” In spite of their political differences, it seemed they may be able to work together on issues such as housing and affordability.
The meeting, which was held in the Oval Office Tuesday afternoon, lasted just over an hour. According to officials, both Trump and Mamdani came prepared with long lists of issues each wanted to discuss. Sources say, even with their different political backgrounds, the talk remained respectful and focused on how to solve problems.
One of the biggest topics was public safety in New York. Mamdani explained that crime has been a large concern for many communities and shared his plans to expand neighborhood programs, improve police training, and increase mental-health support. Trump said safety needed to be a “top priority,” adding that the federal government could provide financial and technical support if New York asked for it.
They also talked about immigration. Mamdani asked for more direct federal guidelines and resources for cities that deal with large numbers of new immigrants. Trump responded that he wants tighter border policies but was willing to coordinate with New York so the system can move more smoothly.
Another key point that was discussed was the economy. Mamdani talked about rebuilding infrastructure, promoting public transportation, and opening more job opportunities for youth. Afterward, Trump spoke to reporters and said he was interested in hearing “fresh plans” and that some of the ideas by Mamdani could work if they were managed correctly.
By the end of this meeting, both leaders expressed a desire to continue working with one another. Trump characterized the discussion as “productive,” while Mamdani said it was “a useful first step” in the development of a strong partnership between them and a safer, better New York.
