A Spring Sports Sized Hole at Central Catholic

Central Catholic’s Practice Football Field remains empty like many fields and parks suffering from lack of utilization.

The next sporting event that will take place for Central Catholic will take place in early September for the junior varsity and varsity soccer teams. But, as you may have guessed, this will only happen if we see a small sliver of normalcy shine over 4720 Fifth Avenue.

By September, it will have been about seven months of separation between Central and the student body. Central sports fans were looking forward to seeing the Varsity team shine in Class 6A baseball. This season, fields will remain covered by tarp. This is how unparalleled COVID-19 has been in our community.

So, what does this really mean for senior athletes? Some were going to use this season to show their college of choice they made the right decision in investing in them, and others were still eyeing that last-minute scholarship. Unlike the NCAA, seniors will, unfortunately, not be able to “reclassify” or take an extra year.

It’s over. Done. They’ve seen the last of The Fleet and will move onto bigger things. When I sit back and think about what that must feel like it all comes back to one thought: “If I was a senior, this would’ve ruined my life.” Imagine working assiduously at your craft and then, something comes up. It’s almost surreal how our life can go from a smooth-flowing stream to a brick wall in an instant.

Central Catholic Baseball has done its part in making sure the seniors are recognized and they know they are appreciated. Head Coach Pat Walsh stopped by each and every one of his player’s homes to supply gifts and support. Like I said, this year was set to be a pivotal part in Vikings Baseball history. However, freshmen and sophomores, they have very different worries about the canceled season, but worries all the same.

Freshmen are bound to be bummed up because their first year got canceled. This was their year to make an impression on their new coach and show them, “Central Baseball needs me in its’ future.” Sophomores, like myself, were going to attempt to make their first push for varsity. All expectations, down the drain!

In order for there to be a morsel of hope for scholar sports to return in the 2020-2021 school year, we need to follow all safety orders given by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Be sure to stay home as much as you can. This doesn’t mean become lazy; you can still get some workout in to stay in shape. Quarantine is what we make it, so let’s be productive with the time we have!
