A One-Stop-Shop for Surviving Course Card Season

The Course Catalog is your best friend when it comes to choosing classes. Used with permission from Central Catholic

While the 4th quarter may just have begun, it is time to begin planning your schedule for next year. Throughout the next two weeks, you’ll have to decide what classes you plan to take for the upcoming year.

Although it seems like a daunting challenge, here are four tried-and-true tips to consider when envisioning next year’s workload:

  1. Use the 2022 – 2023 Course Catalog as your guide. This document provides a plethora of important information that you’ll want to browse before signing up for classes. From course descriptions to graduation requirements, the Course Catalog has it all!
  2. When in doubt, ask your counselors. If you’re unsure about what classes to take next year, stop by the Counseling Center to chat with Mr. Direnzo or Mr. Eller. They’ll help you assess your options and ultimately discover the best schedule for you. I highly recommend scheduling a chat with Mrs. Gershon, too. While college may seem far away for most underclassmen, the courses you take now can directly influence your college admissions.
  3. Take advantage of electives. While each grade level has a varying set of credit requirements, all students are eligible to enroll in electives. These classes can help you find a new passion or cultivate personal interest. From creative writing to robotics, Central Catholic’s electives have something for everyone.
  4. Know your limits. While your course load should be academically challenging, it shouldn’t be designed to crush you. If you plan to enroll in five AP classes while simultaneously playing two sports and participating in three extracurricular activities, I encourage you to give your course card a second glance. Mental health – and burnout – are real, so it’s important to balance your priorities and set reasonable expectations.

While course card season can seem boring and stressful, it’s a time to experiment. So, take the elective. Try a new class. It may end up changing your life!
